Fragen wie diese liegen an der Schnittstelle verschiedener Fachdisziplinen. Für die philosophische Reflexion sind sie daher in besonderer Weise fruchtbar. Im Zentrum der aus triebtheoretischer Perspektive erweiterten Theorie des Ödipuskomplexes von Judith Le Soldat steht das Konzept der aktiven Kastrationstat, die im Verlauf der ödipalen Entwicklung von Jungen wie Mädchen aufgrund der Versagung der passiven und aktiven phallischen Triebwünsche und des dadurch bewirkten aggressiven Triebdurchbruchs imaginär begangen wird. Diese ubiquitäre Kastrationstat führt zu Schuld, Kastrations- und Vernichtungsängsten, gegen die charakteristische Abwehrlösungen gefunden werden müssen, die ihrerseits wieder zu Ausweglosigkeiten in der inneren Welt führen. Ziel dieses Beitrags ist es, diese Trieb- (...) und Abwehrbewegungen und die aus ihnen resultierenden unbewussten Phantasien zu untersuchen, mit einem klinischen Beispiel zu illustrieren und das klinisch und theoretisch fruchtbare Potenzial der theoretischen Erweiterungen von Le Soldat aufzuzeigen. Peer review is a widely accepted instrument for raising the quality of science. Peer review limits the enormous unstructured influx of information and the sheer amount of dubious data, which in its absence would plunge science into chaos. In particular, peer review offers the benefit of eliminating papers that suffer from poor craftsmanship or methodological shortcomings, especially in the experimental sciences. However, we believe that peer review is not always appropriate for the evaluation of controversial hypothetical science. We argue that (...) the process of peer review can be prone to bias towards ideas that affirm the prior convictions of reviewers and against innovation and radical new ideas. Innovative hypotheses are thus highly vulnerable to being “filtered out” or made to accord with conventional wisdom by the peer review process. Consequently, having introduced peer review, the Elsevier journal Medical Hypotheses may be unable to continue its tradition as a radical journal allowing discussion of improbable or unconventional ideas. Hence we conclude by asking the publisher to consider re-introducing the system of editorial review to Medical Hypotheses. (shrink)

Kapitel XV von Über Annahmen (1. Aufl.) beginnt mit einigen bitteren Bemerkungen über den Mangel an Einsicht unter Logikern und Philosophen über das Wesen logischen Schließens. Meinong beklagt, daß man sich mit der Klassifizierung von Schlußformen aufgehalten habe, ohne den Versuch einer Analyse des Folgerungsbegriffs zu unternehmen. Es überrascht wenig, daß Meinong auch bei der Analyse des Folgerungsbegriffs der Annahme eine Schlüsselrolle zuweist. Seine Diskussion führt ihn dabei zu einer UntersuChung des Verhältnisses von Schlüssen aus Urteilen, hypothetischen Urteilen und „Annahmeschlüssen", (...) d.h. Argumenten, deren Prämissen Annahmen sind.Meinongs These, daß es so etwas wie Annahmeschlüsse gibt, erscheint selbstverständlich genug. Die Einführung von Annahmen als Prämissen ist heutzutage nicht nur in Kalkülen natürlichen Schließens eine Standardprozedur, die keiner Rechtfertigung bedarf. Umso mehr muß es daher überraschen, daß Russell in seiner ansonsten enthusiastischen Rezension in Mind (\904) vorgibt, für Schlüsse aus Annahmen nichts übrig zu haben: „I cannot understand how the notion of assumptive inference... can be maintained." Daß es hier in der Tat nicht um einen bloßen Streit um Worte oder ein Mißverständnis geht, wird spätestens dadurch offenkundig, daß auch Frege in diesem Punkt mit Russell vollkommen übereinstimmt. Wie sich jedoch herausstellt, ist der eigentliche Streitpunkt das korrekte Verständnis hypothetischer Urteile: Nach Meinong sind hypothetische Urteile keine Urteile, sondern verkappte Annahmeschlüsse, während Russell (und Frege) genau umgekehrt Annahmeschlüsse als verkappte hypothetische Urteile auffassen. Die Transzendenz in der Bedeutung des Transzendenten als des Absoluten, welches als erstes metaphysisches Prinzip aller Wirklichkeit unendlich erhaben über und zugleich jenseitig bzw. verborgen für die Reichweite der Erkenntnisvermögen des endlichen Intellekts ist, stellt einen festen doktrinalen Bestandteil sowohl der henologischen (d. h. einheitsmetaphysischen) als auch der ontologisch-noologischen Tradition der metaphysischen Prinzipientheorie im abendländischen Denken dar. Weil eine absolute Einheit unbegrenzt sein muss, um vollkommen einfach sein zu können, ist das erste, schlechthin einfache Prinzip aller Wirklichkeit nicht nur transzendent (...) gegenüber allem anderen, d. h. unendlich verschieden von ihm und unendlich erhaben über es; sondern es muss aufgrund seiner unbegrenzten Einheit zugleich auch allem anderen unübertrefflich nahe und gegenwärtig, das aber bedeutet: allem anderen innewohnend bzw. immanent sein. Mit anderen Worten: Gerade aufgrund der unendlichen Einfachheit seines Wesens muss Gott als das Absolute der Welt gegenüber nicht nur schlechthin transzendent, sondern ihr auch in ebenso vollkommener Weise immanent bzw. in ihr allgegenwärtig sein, und zwar als ihr kreatives, konstitutives und finalursächlich bestimmendes Prinzip. Diese klassisch-metaphysische Verhältnisbestimmung zwischen der Transzendenz und der Immanenz Gottes hat in den modernen Religionsphilosophien von E. Przywara und P. »Denn nur als Universalkategorie des gesamten gesellschaftlichen Seins ist die Ware in ihrer unverfälschten Wesensart begreifbar. Erst in diesem Zusammenhang gewinnt die durch das Warenverhältnis entstandene Verdinglichung eine entscheidende Bedeutung sowohl für die objektive Entwicklung der Gesellschaft wie für das Verhalten der Menschen zu ihr; für das Unterworfenwerden ihres Bewußtseins den Formen, in denen sich diese Verdinglichung ausdrückt; für die Versuche, diesen Prozeß zu begreifen oder sich gegen seine verheerenden Wirkungen aufzulehnen, sich von dieser Knechtschaft unter der so entstandenen ›zweiten (...) Natur‹ zu befreien.« Das einflußreichste Werk von Georg Lukács ist die Aufsatzsammlung Geschichte und Klassenbewußtsein, ein Grundlagentext des westlichen Marxismus und der kritischen Theorie. 1923 erschienen, sorgte sie sofort für hitzige Kontroversen und brachte Lukács viel Kritik ein: dem sozialistischen Lager war sie zu marxistisch, den Leninisten nicht linientreu genug. Schon früh distanzierte sich Lukács von diesen Schriften, sowohl unter dem Eindruck ihrer immanenten theoretischen Widersprüche, als auch durch seine eigene Entwicklung zum stalinistischen Kader. An ihrer Wirkung änderte dies allerdings nichts. Der Band enthält Lukács’ Aufsätze »Was ist orthodoxer Marxismus?« und »Die Verdinglichung und das Bewußtsein des Proletariats« aus Geschichte und Klassenbewußtsein. Darum kreisen die Diskussionsbeiträge. (shrink)

Dieser Beitrag stellt einerseits die sozialpsychologische Autoritarismusforschung des Instituts für Sozialforschung der 1930-40er Jahre vor und andererseits aktuelle Debatten, die an diese Forschung anschließen. Drei Stränge oder Dimensionen der Auseinandersetzung werden beleuchtet: Erstens das Konzept des »autoritären Charakters« als »potenziell faschistische Persönlichkeit« und die Frage nach autoritären Dispositionen, die die Individuen anfällig machen für autoritäre Propaganda, zweitens die Analysen faschistischer Propaganda, die sich im amerikanischen Exil vor allem auf Agitatoren in den USA richteten, drittens Überlegungen zur Massenpsychologie, d. h. zur (...) Attraktivität autoritärer Bewegungen und der in ihnen wirkenden Dynamiken. Gefragt wird stets danach, inwiefern die in der ersten Hälfte des vergangenen Jahrhunderts geschriebenen Studien auch für eine Analyse heutiger autoritärer Dynamiken und Bewegungen unter postfordistischen Bedingungen noch aktuell sind und wo aber auch Verschiebungen und Veränderungen im Autoritarismus zu verzeichnen sind. Diese Ausführungen stellen ein theoretisches Fundament für die in diesem Band versammelten Studien zu autoritären Dynamiken in der Corona-Pandemie dar. (shrink)

Durch die Beobachtung, dass menschliches Leben immer gefährdet ist und sich in einer Weise vollzieht, die als nicht vollkommen verstehbar ist, ergibt sich für nahezu jede Religion und jedes philosophische System die Frage nach Erlösung und Vollendung. Während sich der Terminus der Erlösung insbesondere im Christentum auf die Konstitution der Überwindung von Übel und Bösem bezieht und entweder so verstanden wird, dass Erlösung sowohl die Überwindung von natürlichem als auch sozialem Übel beinhaltet, oder aber so, dass sie sich v. a. (...) auf die Überwindung von natürlichem Übel bezieht und durch die Versöhnung im sozialen Bereich ergänzt wird (vgl. Ritschl 1882, 4), bezieht sich die Vollendung auf das eschatische, d. h. letztgültige Ziel welthaften Werdens. Während das Bewusstsein der Unerlöstheit der Welt phänomenal auch unabhängig von unterschiedlichen Traditionen einsehbar sein mag, ergibt sich hinsichtlich Erlösung und Vollendung jedoch das Problem, dass von etwas die Rede ist, das noch im Wesentlichen unbekannt und nicht einfach durch traditionslose Rationalität zugänglich ist, und das sich notwendigerweise einer Offenbarung der vollendeten Realität verdanken muss. Die öffentliche Beschaffung wird immer mehr in die Pflicht genommen, Nachhaltigkeit in die Auftragsvergabe einzubeziehen. Institutionen des öffentlichen Sektors geben in Deutschland jährlich 350 Mrd. EUR für die Beschaffung von Gütern und Dienstleistungen aus. In Anbetracht der wirtschaftlichen Bedeutung sowie der Vorbildfunktion der öffentlichen Hand wird ihr eine wesentliche Nachfragerolle zugesprochen, um im Beschaffungsmarkt als Wachstumstreiber nachhaltige, d. h. umweltfreundliche und sozial verantwortungsbewusste Produkte und Dienstleistungen im großen Umfang zu fördern. Die bestehenden und umfangreichen vergaberechtlichen Möglichkeiten werden durch immer neue (...) politische Initiativen (z. B. Kreislaufwirtschaftsgesetz oder Lieferkettensorgfaltspflichtengesetz) kontinuierlich und in immer schnelleren Zyklen ausgebaut. Allerdings zeigt die Vergabestatistik des 1. Halbjahres 2021, dass nachhaltige Zuschlagskriterien in nur 4 % der Vergaben eingesetzt werden und damit ein erhebliches Umsetzungsdefizit vorliegt. Der Fokus des Beitrags liegt deshalb auf zwei Untersuchungen aus der öffentlichen Beschaffungspraxis und orientiert sich insbesondere an der ökologischen Nachhaltigkeitskomponente in ihren verschiedenen Auslegungen. Despite some principal similarities, there is no systematic comparison between the different types of synesthesia . This comprehensive review compares the three principal types of synesthesia and focuses on their phenomenological features and their relation to different etiological models. Implications of this comparison for the validity of the different etiological models are discussed.Comparison of the three forms of synesthesia show many more differences than similarities. This is in contrast to their representation in the literature, where they are discussed in many (...) respects as being virtually similar. Noteworthy is the much broader spectrum and intensity with the typical drug-induced synesthesias compared to genuine and acquired synesthesias. A major implication of the phenomenological comparison in regard to the etiological models is that genuine and acquired synesthesias point to morphological substrates, while drug-induced synesthesia appears to be based on functional changes of brain activity. Grounded cognition states that mental representations of concepts consist of experiential aspects. For example, the concept “cup” consists of the sensorimotor experiences from interactions with cups. Typical modalities in which concepts are grounded are: The sensorimotor system (including interoception), emotion, action, language, and social aspects. Here, we argue that this list should be expanded to include physical invariants (unchanging features of physical motion; e.g., gravity, momentum, friction). Research on physical reasoning consistently demonstrates that physical invariants are represented as fundamentally as (...) other grounding substrates, and therefore should qualify. We assess several theories of concept representation (simulation, conceptual metaphor, conceptual spaces, predictive processing) and their positions on physical invariants. We find that the classic grounded cognition theories, simulation and conceptual metaphor theory, have not considered physical invariants, while conceptual spaces and predictive processing have. We conclude that physical invariants should be included into grounded cognition theories, and that the core mechanisms of simulation and conceptual metaphor theory are well suited to do this. Furthermore, conceptual spaces and predictive processing are very promising and should also be integrated with grounded cognition in the future. (shrink)

Properties sometimes attributed to the “particle” aspect of a neutron, e.g., mass and magnetic moment, cannot straightforwardly be regarded in the Bohm interpretation of quantum mechanics as localized at the hypothetical position of the particle. This is shown by examining a series of effects in neutron interferometry. A related thought-experiment also provides a variation of a recent demonstration that which-way detectors can appear to behave anomolously in the Bohm theory.

The field of grounded cognition is concerned with how concepts are represented by re-activation of the bodily modalities. Considerable empirical work supports this core tenet, but the field is rife with meta-theoretical issues which prevent meaningfully progressing beyond this. We describe these issues and provide a solution: an overarching theoretical framework. The two most commonly cited grounded cognition theories are perceptual symbol systems and conceptual metaphor theory. Under perceptual symbol systems, concepts are represented by integrating fragments of multi-modal percepts in (...) a simulator. Conceptual metaphor theory involves a limited number of image schemas, primitive structural regularities extracted from interaction with the environment, undergoing a limited number of transformations into a concept. Both theories constitute important developments to understanding mental representations, yet we argue that they currently impede progress because they are prematurely elaborate. This forces them to rely on overly specific assumptions, which generates a lack of conceptual clarity and unsystematic testing of empirical work. Our minimalist account takes grounded cognition ‘back to basics’ with a common-denominator framework supported by converging evidence from other fields. It postulates that concepts are represented by simulation, re-activating mental states that were active when experiencing this concept, and by metaphoric mapping, when concrete representations are sourced to represent abstract concepts. This enables incremental theory development without uncertain assumptions because it allows for descriptive research while nonetheless enabling falsification of theories. Our proposal provides the tools to resolve meta-theoretical issues and encourages a research program that integrates grounded cognition into the cognitive sciences. (shrink)

J. S. Bell's classic 1966 review paper on the foundations of quantum mechanics led directly to the Bell nonlocality theorem. It is not widely appreciated that the review paper contained the basic ingredients needed for a nonlocality result which holds in certain situations where the Bell inequality is not violated. We present in this paper a systematic formulation and evaluation of an argument due to Stairs in 1983, which establishes a nonlocality result based on the Bell-Kochen-Specker “paradox” in quantum mechanics.

I argue that the current view (as held by, eg., Warnock, Anscombe and Stenius) of Wittgenstein's theory of language in the Tractates is mistaken. This view maintains that Wittgenstein's theory is one of 'isomorphism'; that, roughly, a sentence has meaning in virtue of its being a facsimile of a fact or possible fact. But a detailed study of significant passages in the Tractattis shows that Wittgenstein held no such view. His use of important terms, such as Salz, Bild, Sachverhalt, Tatsache (...) , etc., has been crucially misunderstood. There is no isomorphism. The theory is not about sentences at all, but about talking sense. (shrink)

The book called The Consolation of Philosophy was throughout the Middle Ages, and down to the beginnings of the modern epoch in the sixteenth century, the scholars familiar companion. Few books have exercised a wider influence in their time. It has been translated into every European tongue, and into English nearly a dozen times, from King Alfreds paraphrase to the translations of Lord Preston, Causton, Ridpath, and Duncan, in the eighteenth century.
